What is Anti-personnel mines?
“Anti-personnel mine” means a mine designed to be exploded by the presence, proximity or contact of a person and that will incapacitate, injure or kill one or more persons.
Anti-personnel mines are specifically regulated under IHL due to their potential for indiscriminate effects. When anti-personnel mines are used, particular care must be taken to minimise their indiscriminate effects on civilians and civilian objects.

Main Rules
- Do not use victim-activated anti-personnel mines under any circumstances.
- Do not make or produce anti-personnel mines.
- Never take, receive, buy, give, trade or sell anti-personnel mines, even with allies.
- Do not stockpile or retain anti-personnel mines.
- Do your best to prevent anyone from moving or using anti-personnel mines in your area.
- Mark, record and report to your superior all areas you know or believe to be mined.
- Warn civilians and communities, especially children, of the dangers of anti-personnel mines and to stay away from mined areas.
- Cooperate actively in mine clearance.
- Help mine victims as much as you can, remembering they deserve respect and compassion.
- Promote and explain the total anti-personnel mine ban to those with whom you come into contact – combatants and civilians.
