ANTI-PERSONNEL MINES

What is Anti-personnel mines?

“Anti-personnel mine” means a mine designed to be exploded by the presence, proximity or contact of a person and that will incapacitate, injure or kill one or more persons. 

Anti-personnel mines are specifically regulated under IHL due to their potential for indiscriminate effects. When anti-personnel mines are used, particular care must be taken to minimise their indiscriminate effects on civilians and civilian objects.

Main Rules

1. Do not use victim-activated anti-personnel mines under any circumstances.
 
2. Do not make or produce anti-personnel mines.
 
3. Never take, receive, buy, give, trade or sell anti-personnel mines, even with allies.
4. Do not stockpile or retain anti-personnel mines.
 
5. Do your best to prevent anyone from moving or using anti-personnel mines in your area.
 
6. Mark, record and report to your superior all areas you know or believe to be mined.
 
7. Warn civilians and communities, especially children, of the dangers of anti-personnel mines and to stay away from mined areas.
 
8. Cooperate actively in mine clearance.
 
9. Help mine victims as much as you can, remembering they
deserve respect and compassion.
 
10. Promote and explain the total anti-personnel mine ban to those with whom you come into contact – combatants and civilians.
