Child Protection

CHILD PROTECTION

What is Child Protection?

Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of armed conflict. Children are killed or maimed, made orphans, abducted, deprived of education and health care, recruited and used as child soldiers and left with deep emotional trauma.
As a norm of customary international law, children affected by armed conflict are entitled to special respect and protection in both international and non-international armed conflicts.

Main Rules

1. Do not use children in combat or combat-related activities, even if they volunteer.

2. Do not force children to associate with armed forces in any manner.

3. Do not recruit children under the age of 18 into armed forces or allow them to be members, even if they volunteer.

4. Children should only be detained as a last resort.

5. Never execute children.

6. When children associated with armed forces leave, it must be done in safety.

7. Do not attack schools and universities.

8. Do not use schools and universities for any military purpose, otherwise they may lose their protection from attack.

9. Do not base military forces or military equipment close to schools and universities.

10. Do not attack, threaten, harass, abduct or commit other violations against students, teachers and other people involved in education.
